What's Wrong With Sports
While “The Grandeur” loves his sports, there a couple of things that are just wrong. Here are some of them.
-Money. Player and coaches salaries have gone up so much they have caused a huge division between the team and its fans. When players made about the same or just above that of regular “working Joe’s” there was more respect and more in common. Now because athletes are paid so much they are put on such a high pedestal they are almost immune from the law, other’s people’s respect and the harsh reality of the real world. They have become gods because of their paycheck and they know it.
-Uniforms. They’re should be rules about what changes can be made to a team’s uniform. All these dramatic design changes every so often ruins a team’s credibility because they lose that which with they are most identifiable with. That is why college athletics are great because the colors never change. They might add a couple lines or shapes but that style and the mascot are their forever. And in pro sports it’s no coincidence that the teams that stick with their own classic uniforms tend to be the best such as the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys and Boston Celtics.
-Agents. So this kind of goes back to the whole money thing but these guys are often so crooked they deserve their own category. They take well-minded and solid athletes and sell them to the idea of selling their soul. Guys like Drew Rosenhaus who corrupted Terrell Owens and wrecked the Eagles excellent franchise a few years back and guys like Scott Boras who announced A-Rod’s contract shuffle in the middle of the World Series. Agents have their place in sports but they could use a code of ethics to follow.
-Rankings. This is especially true in high school sports where we build these mythical national champions and have high school teams play each other to see who is the “best in the west” or some other silly title. High school games should be kept in-state and the biggest deal should be winning a state title, not beating some other team three states over.
-Trash talk. No really cares how big of a mouth some other player has if he or she can’t back it up. With the exception of the great smack talkers like Muhammad Ali and Joe Namath, most athletes should just be quiet. The Patriots are great example of team who just goes out there, beats people around and then leaves and ditto for guys like Derek Jeter and Brett Favre. Because “well done” is better than “well said.”
-Sports columnists. Those guys run their mouths all the time about what they think teams and players should be doing while they’ve probably never been in on a team meeting. What’s worse, they actually make money for doing this. Oh well, at least they do their part to feed the machine.
